How to set up Microsoft Clarity

Step by step

  1. Create a project

    Go to https://clarity.microsoft.com, sign in and click + New project. Enter your site name and address.

  2. Copy your project ID

    Open Settings > Overview and copy the Project ID, a short code of letters and numbers.

  3. Add it to your site

    Paste the project ID into your site's Clarity setting. Or in Tag Manager add Clarity from the Community Template Gallery and fire it on all pages after consent.

  4. Check it is recording

    Visit your site in a new window, then open Recordings in Clarity. Your visit should appear within a few minutes.

  5. Connect Google Analytics

    In Settings > Setup, connect your GA4 property so you can jump from a GA4 segment to the matching recordings.

  6. Mask private fields

    Check Settings > Masking is on Balanced or Strict, so form entries are never recorded.

  7. Watch the right sessions

    Filter recordings by Rage clicks, Dead clicks or your pricing page, and watch five or six. Most funnel leaks are obvious once you see them.

Tips from people who set these up every week

  • Load Clarity only after visitors accept cookies, the same as your other tags.
  • Heatmaps of your pricing and form pages are the quickest wins: look for buttons people click that do nothing.

Troubleshooting: questions and answers

No recordings are showing.

It can take up to two hours for the first one. Check the project ID is right and that you accepted cookies on your own visit.

Is Clarity really free?

Yes, Microsoft does not charge for it and there is no traffic limit.
