Step by step

  1. Find your Partner ID

    In Campaign Manager go to Analyze > Insight Tag, then Manage Insight Tag > See tag. Copy your Partner ID (a number).

  2. Add the Insight Tag

    In Tag Manager: Tags > New > LinkedIn Insight (in the Community Template Gallery, or built in), enter the Partner ID and fire on All Pages with ad_storage required. Or a Custom HTML tag:

    HTML
    <script>
      _linkedin_partner_id = "YOUR_PARTNER_ID";
      window._linkedin_data_partner_ids = window._linkedin_data_partner_ids || [];
      window._linkedin_data_partner_ids.push(_linkedin_partner_id);
    </script>
    <script>
    (function(l) { if (!l){window.lintrk = function(a,b){window.lintrk.q.push([a,b])}; window.lintrk.q=[]}
    var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]; var b = document.createElement("script");
    b.type = "text/javascript";b.async = true; b.src = "https://snap.licdn.com/li.lms-analytics/insight.min.js";
    s.parentNode.insertBefore(b, s);})(window.lintrk);
    </script>
  3. Make the conversion

    In Campaign Manager: Analyze > Conversion tracking > Create conversion > Conversion API or Insight Tag. Name it Lead, pick Submit application or Lead, set the value, choose your campaigns, and under method pick Insight Tag then Event-specific. Copy the conversion ID it shows.

  4. Fire the conversion on a lead

    A Custom HTML tag on CE - generate_lead, with the Insight Tag set to fire first:

    HTML
    <script>
      window.lintrk('track', { conversion_id: 12345678 });
    </script>

    Replace 12345678 with your conversion ID. Make one conversion per lead type if you want them separate.

  5. Test it

    Publish, send a real test lead, then check Conversion tracking: the conversion's status changes to Active once LinkedIn receives it, usually within a day. The Insight Tag page should show your domain as verified.

  6. Add it to campaigns

    Open your campaign > Conversion tracking and tick the new conversion, so LinkedIn reports and optimises against it.

Tips from people who set these up every week

  • Event-specific conversions are more accurate than page-load ones: a thank-you page can be reached without a lead.
  • LinkedIn also offers a Conversions API; the conversion ID you made here can be used there later.

Troubleshooting: questions and answers

The conversion stays 'No recent activity'.

LinkedIn only counts conversions from members who saw or clicked your ads. Test leads from people who never saw an ad won't show; check the Insight Tag is firing instead.

Do I need the Insight Tag on every page?

Yes, for retargeting and website demographics. The conversion tag only on leads.
